How to Tie Up Peas in Garden
updated: February 16, 2011
Peas grow well in most soil types, but they need stakes to keep them off the ground, except dwarf peas. If you do not stake the peas, they will be more susceptible to diseases and insect infestation. Placing a trellis support system next to the peas will allow them to grow vertically. Planting them next to a trellis will give you more gardening space as opposed to allowing them to grow on the ground.
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
Things You'll Need:
- Measuring tape
- 8-foot metal poles with hooks
- Garden netting
- Twine
- Measure the row of peas to determine the length. Place an 8-foot metal pole every 4 feet along the row. Place the poles next to the peas and 2 feet deep into the ground.
- Place garden netting onto the hooks on your poles. Loop the netting over the pole hooks along the length of the peas.
- Cut a piece of twine the length of the pea row. Tie the twine 12 inches above the soil level onto each pole when the peas reach 12 to 15 inches in height.
- Place the pea plants between the twine and the netting. The plants will grow onto the trellis, which will make it easier for you to harvest them.
- Add another piece of twine 12 inches above the previous twine when the plant grows. Continue adding twine to help support every foot of plant growth.
- Pinch back the pea plants if they grow taller than the trellis. This will prevent them from growing over the trellis and back onto the ground.
