How to Use Coffee Grinds in Vegetable Gardens

How to Use Coffee Grinds in Vegetable Gardensthumbnail
Add used coffee grounds to vegetable gardens to keep the plants healthy.
Instead of throwing away used coffee grounds, save them in a container to reuse in your garden. The dried grounds provide organic soil nutrients and can act as mulch to your vegetables. Used coffee grounds are not acidic because most of the acid remains in the coffee beverage. Composted coffee contains high levels of nitrogen and helps to neutralize compost piles.

Moderately Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • 5-gallon bucket
    • 1
Add coffee grounds directly to a compost pile. You can also add the paper filters that you use in the coffee pot. Coffee grounds mix well with worm composting, compost bins or compost piles. Add up to 20 percent of coffee grounds to the compost volume for best results.
    • 2
Sprinkle 1 tbsp. of coffee grounds around each plant. Water the plant after you add the coffee so that it soaks into the soil. The coffee acts as a slow-release fertilizer and enriches the soil.
    • 3
Combine 1/2 lb. of coffee grounds with 5 gallons of water in a 5-gallon bucket. Allow the coffee grounds to soak in the water for 24 hours. Strain the coffee grounds from the water and pour the water into a watering can. Water your vegetables with this liquid fertilizer to raise nitrogen levels.
    • 4
Apply 1 inch of coffee grounds around the vegetable plants to create organic mulch. When the coffee ground mulch breaks down, replace it around the plants. Cover the coffee mulch with an organic mulch to prevent it from breaking down quickly.
