What Insecticide Is Used for Bugs on Pepper Plants?
updated: February 2, 2011
Pepper plants can be the victim of such pests as the European corn borer, aphids and the beet armyworm. The type of insecticide used depends on what pests are present.
- Most pests can be controlled by the application of pyrethroid insecticides. These chemicals kill both pests and beneficial insects, so they should be used with care. Apply this insecticide when bees are not active, to minimize harm to the bees.
- Insecticidal soaps can be purchased, but they can also be easily made with dishwashing liquid and water. Soap works best when sprayed directly on aphids or other troublesome insects. It is environmentally safe and is the best choice close to harvest time.
- Aphids may actually increase when insecticides are applied to peppers, due to the fact that these poisons kill the aphids' predators. Orthene or Cygon are the best insecticide choices when dealing with aphids.
