Tomatoes are an excellent food choice because they are rich in vitamins A and C and fiber. They have no fat or cholesterol, and they are low in calories and sodium. Growing your own tomatoes can help you to save money and to know exactly what your food has been exposed to. One unconventional method of planting tomatoes is to grow them in bales of hay. The hay serves to control weeds, provide good drainage and situate tomatoes at a height that is easier for gardeners to reach.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 lb. of limestone
  • Pitchfork
  • Standard water-soluble fertilizer
  1. Situate the bales in an area that receives full sunlight. Position them so that the binding twines are running parallel to the soil beneath the bales.
  2. Saturate the bales with water. An average bale of 40 to 50 lbs. requires about 15 gallons of water.
  3. Sprinkle approximately 1 lb. of limestone onto each bale. Mix it into the bales gently with a pitchfork.
  4. Compost the bales by watering them daily with 4 oz. of standard water-soluble fertilizer (like 20-10-20 or 18-18-21) per gallon of water. Do this for 10 days to raise the temperature within the bales. Remove any weed sprouts that may arise.
  5. Push two holes into the top of each bale and place a plant into each hole.
  6. Fill the holes with soil.
  7. Water your plants daily.
